old students music video awards

Todays task was to go to this playlist on youtube as a pair. Each pair was allocated particular sets of videos to look at.

We watched the videos we were allocated and then had to choose examples which we would shortlist for any or all of the following categories:

Best band performance
Best male vocal
Best female vocal
Best use of location
Best camerawork
Best editing
Most innovative concept


We also had to choose one for the 'Wooden Spoon award'. This video would be one that we thought was particularly poor and from which lessons could be learnt about what NOT to do.


Most innovative concept = Sunday Morning Song Mk1.
Best male vocal = Morning Song Mk1.
Best camera work = Sunday Morning Song Mk1.



Me and Max gave this video the award for innovative concept as it has an un-expected twist at the end however when the video was shown to the class it a few people said that they knew it was coming. We also gave this video best male vocal award as it is very well lip synced and he looks like he means it most of the time. We gave this video best camera work as there are the right amount of close ups, long shots and some nice panning as well.




Best band performance = My Neighbor’ s House




We gave this video best band performance as it is the only one that we watched that has a band performance in it. We liked this video although we agreed that there should have been more shots of the drummer and the part where one of them smashes up their guitar on the amp is a bit long and unnecessary.


Best female vocal = Settle Down



We gave this video best female vocal as it was the only one we watched with a female vocalist other than 'sunday morning song Mk2.' but that was a girl singing to a male vocal.

Best use of location = Harms Way



Harms way got best use of location as we thought they did a very good job with the props and the idea was good. If they had put a bit more thought into it and done some more close ups it could have looked very good.

Best editing = Do No Wrong



Do no wrong got best editing because we liked the split screen and the effects however the footage its self was not very good and could have been heaps better.

Wooden spoon award = Morning Song Mk2.



Sunday morning song Mk2. got the wooden spoon, despite Mk1. getting 3 awards. This way be because we watched Mk1 first and then Mk2 looked bad but we felt it was just a bit random and that the editor hadn't really understood the concept.



I found this exercise very useful. I know that i have learned a lot about what does and does not work when making a music video just from watching others. I will probably continue to watch other videos and do some more research into the pros and cons of different ideas and techniques.
